7303 Level 3 Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector
(4 day course)
The purpose of this City and Guilds 7303 scheme is to provide an introduction for those who wish to train or teach. It is a qualification that will equip a wide range of trainers, facilitators and teachers to support learners.
City and Guilds 7303 (C&G 7303) is a stepping stone award and replaces the C&G 7302 and micro-teaching element of the old Certificate in Further and Adult Education Teaching (7307 stage 1). C&G 7303 introduces candidates to delivering training and is ideal for trainers in commerce, industry, public and voluntary sectors or HM forces, who might not have had the opportunity to build up any teaching hours.
City and Guilds 7303 is designed to contribute towards the knowledge and understanding for the Further Education National Training Organisation (FENTO) or the Employment National Training Organisation (EMPNTO) occupational standards. (These occupational standards are also the framework that underpin the C&G 7303 award).

provided they are qualified in the subject they intend to teach by virtue of holding an appropriate professional qualification or employed in a training/teaching role. The decision as to what constitutes an appropriate qualification is at the discretion of the training provider.
There are no specific entry requirements for this qualification; however, there is a considerable amount of written work to be completed. This will involve reading of supplied reference books, researching specific topics, applying theory to practical scenarios and demonstrating knowledge and understanding through written work. Therefore, candidates for this course should have a good standard of written and verbal communications skills.

What are the requirements for new teachers wishing to teach in the lifelong learning sector?
From September 2007, all teachers, tutors, trainers, lecturers or instructors are required to hold a professional certificate. (as per the new reforms to initial teacher training introduced in England) From that day on, all new teachers in the learning and skills sector (all post-16 education including FE, adult and community learning, work based learning and offender education) in England are required to take qualifications which form part of the Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) framework and pilot Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF), and gain licensed practitioner status – QTLS/ATLS. Teachers in a ‘full’ teaching role have five years in which to meet these requirements.

All teachers in the lifelong learning sector who deliver LSC-funded training and qualifications, and who teach in contexts such as: FE colleges; specialist colleges; work-based learning (WBL); Learning and Skills Council (LSC) funded voluntary and community based learning; and armed forces learning.

What is 7303 PTLLS?
PTLLS is the acronym for the Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. It is both an introductory course and professional qualification which gives a threshold status to teach. It is a mandatory qualification for all new teachers who teach publicly funded provision. It has been designed to develop and accredit the breadth of knowledge and skills required by teachers to develop and manage the learning process.
It is a one unit award comprising five ‘sections’. The award has a credit value of 6 credits on the QCF. It forms the first unit/module of all 120 credit diploma qualifications and the 24 credit CTLLS programme; it can therefore be offered as an integrated unit/module or as a discrete award.
If taken as a stand-alone qualification, it can receive accreditation of prior learning (APL) within 7304 CTLLS, 7305 DTLLS, and the level 5 subject specialist diplomas for literacy, ESOL and numeracy (120 credits).

What are the entry requirements?
Basically, there are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, but candidates must be considering a subject for delivery and be aiming to achieve / or have achieved a qualification and experience for their subject/skill at the appropriate level. However, candidates will be expected to
• be aged 21 or over
• have a qualification or experience in the subject they want to teach (only if you want to take the CTLLS/DTLLS)
• have at least a Level 2 of Literacy and Numeracy (only if you want to take the CTLLS/DTLLS)
• be competent in written and spoken English
• be prepared to do up to three hours self-study every day of the course
• enjoy the idea of studying as a part of a group of people from different subject areas and backgrounds
• have enough passion, patience and persistence to clear it all off in a single shot
• attend a College interview and complete a written assessment test
It is a demanding course, and trainees must commit a lot of time and effort to it.

What is the duration of the course? / How long is the course?
The course will last for 4 full days over two weeks and only at the weekends i.e. Saturdays and Sundays. The sessions will start at 10 a.m. and finish by 5 p.m. So, it will be a purely intensive course.

What will I study on the course? / What are the course contents?
The topics in the course are:
• Section 1: Understand own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching
• Section 2: Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area
• Section 3: Demonstrate session planning skills
• Section 4: Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners
• Section 5: Understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping

Yes. By the end of the 4th day, you should have completed both your assignments on this course.

Should I already be a teacher? / Do I need previous teaching experience?
No, it is not a mandatory requirement that you should be a teacher. However, if you are a teacher, trainer, tutor or instructor it is an added benefit.

Can any of my previous knowledge be accredited for this course?
There is no real opportunity for APL with this course. We have a lot of people who have trained for years and need a recognised qualification. It is far easier because of the assignments and the whole course getting over in just 2 weeks time over just 4 days.

Is the micro-teaching compulsory? / Will I have to teach on the course?
Yes, it is a mandatory requirement of the course. You must do it.

What subjects can I do my micro-teaching session on?
You can do it on any subject that you wish. You can make life a lot easier for yourself by doing something that you may have already prepared and deliver regularly. It can simply be anything – say Maths, Indian head massage, Adobe Photoshop, security, first-aid, English as a foreign language... Anything means anything that can be taught!!!

How am I assessed? / How does assessment take place?
This qualification is centre assessed using different types of assessment, including supervision of micro-teaching, written assignments, reports, coursework and a journal of teaching and discussion. You will be assessed through a series of written and practical tasks.
The assessment is criterion referenced, based on the achievement of specified criteria. Each of the units contains contextualised pass criteria for unit assessment in each case. So, students are expected to maintain a satisfactory record of attendance, punctuality and professional conduct throughout the course.

How much teaching practice is required?
Candidates are required to undertake a minimum of 30 minutes micro-teaching (delivery of a teaching session to peers in a learning setting) or teaching practice. This time falls into candidates’ non-contact hours within the programme. Full guidance is provided in the qualification handbook.

What is the observation requirement?
The minimum 30 minutes micro-teach / teaching practice delivery must be observed by the tutor/observer, who must give feedback and complete an observation report provided in the appendices of the qualification handbook. Observations should last for a minimum of 15 minutes for each session.
For micro-teaching observation, feedback must be given by the candidate’s peer group. There must be a minimum of three peer evaluations per candidate per micro-teaching session.

Is a teaching practice portfolio required?
Candidates are encouraged to compile a teaching practice portfolio during their programme of study. The portfolio should be a concise log of micro-teaching / teaching practice undertaken and should include their log of 30 minutes micro-teaching / teaching practice and evidence relating to their learners/peers, session planning, delivery and evaluation. It will include observations of their teaching by the course team and their peers (for micro-teaching only) for at least 30 minutes of their teaching in total (minimum of 15 minutes each session). The teaching practice portfolio is not a mandatory requirement of the PTLLS Award, but is deemed good practice.

Is a reflective learning journal required?
Candidates should write a reflective learning journal from the commencement of the programme. They are permitted to use their own journal format during the course or use the pro forma provided in the appendices of the qualification handbook. Candidates must complete a journal entry after each assessment task (e.g. task1, task 2, task 3, etc) completed for the theory and practical assessments and/or each session attended throughout the PTLLS programme.

What does the cost of the course include?
It includes registration with the awarding body, tuition fee, assessment and certification. Once you have been accepted by the college, the full payment is required to be paid in order to secure a place.

What is the next step? / What are the progression routes?
Progression courses from the 7303 scheme are the:
7304 Scheme - Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS). This qualification is appropriate for those in an Associate Teacher Role or who are involved in work based learning training, assessment and support;
7305 Scheme – Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS). This is appropriate for those in a Full Teacher Role. All teachers in the full role must complete this requirement within 5 years.
Candidates may carry forward the 6 credits achieved through the PTLLS Award into both CTLLS and DTLLS, as it forms a mandatory introductory unit for both qualifications.
