SIA Training Gives You Options

04 July 2009

Working in the security industry is something that is a lot less simple these days that it used to be. In as much as there was a security industry back in the day, it consisted of pubs and clubs hiring bouncers who could sort out any trouble with the strength of their physical presence. Generally, the best person to hire was someone who looked like they could handle themselves in a fight, enough so to discourage anyone from trying. If there then was a fight – and only then – the “bouncer” would do the physical part of the job. With SIA training now an indispensable part of any potential security worker’s requirements, things have changed profoundly, and most would say it is for the better.

A doorman working in a bar or club now will require Door Supervisor Training accredited by the SIA. This is essential, and non-negotiable. Even if you have been working in the industry for twenty years, it is still a requirement to get the correct training. This is because the industry has become standardised to a point where in order to ensure that every pub and club employs suitable candidates, one must first ensure that there are not any blind spots in a door supervisor’s suitability for the role. If someone has the physical build and strength to do the job, but cannot carry the duties out without straying into illegal behaviour, they will bring consequences for themselves and for their employer.

It is just as essential for a premises manager to ensure that anyone they hire has the credentials for the job. From a hypothetical point of view, if a manager hires a door supervisor who does not have the required appreciation of what is legal conduct and what is not then the manager is culpable as well if the individual they hired has not got the correct accreditation. Ignorance is no defence – it is essential to ensure that the person you hire has got their SIA Licence, so if you are hiring a door supervisor it is important to make sure they show  their licence, rather than just telling you they have one. Working illegally as a door supervisor, and hiring someone to do so, is punishable in some cases by imprisonment.

The advantage to getting the correct security licence is that it genuinely broadens your options for working within the security industry. Many SIA Licences are Integrated, meaning that if you qualify for a licence after a Door Supervisor Training course, you automatically qualify as a Security Guard as well, making you that bit more versatile and increasingly attractive as an employee. Taking and passing the course may seem like an inconvenience up front, but once you have done it you will see just how beneficial it was, as a good security worker is well worth paying for and is recognised as such within the industry. The course, in addition, may well cause you to see things in another way and really enhance your ability to do the job.
