Security Work A Varied Field SIA Training

04 July 2009

A lot of people – too many, if we are being honest – get an image in their head when told that someone works in the SIA security industry which is unflattering at best, and downright insulting at worst. The idea of a SIA trained security worker as someone with fists clenched who struggles with words of more than one syllable is a ridiculous stereotype, as anyone who has spent time in the company of a good security worker SIA Trained will happily tell you. Being good at a job within the SIA security industry requires a certain shrewdness and persuasive abilities that are not present in most people. This is particularly the case as jobs within the security industry are more varied than just those at “front of house”.

CCTV Training, for example, will allow someone to work within the security industry without necessarily ever facing the public. In this role you will instead be required to follow pictures of what is going on inside the premises, keeping your gaze in as many places as possible without becoming dangerously distracted. In so doing you will be able to stop situations from developing within the building in places where they may be missed by the rest of the security staff. A well-positioned CCTV camera can pick out areas of the club that are isolated and seemingly perfectly secluded – exactly the kind of place where for example a drug deal may be made, or physical violence might swiftly be carried out. Having someone in a position to look out for this is invaluable.

Having good security staff depends on a whole lot more than just picking people who have skills that work well in isolation. Getting the best staff in place, if you are appointing for a large premises, will also depend on how well the security team works together. Someone with SIA training in the CCTV field will be useful, undoubtedly, but they will be all the more useful if you have people who have had Security Guard Training working in tandem with the others. From CCTV footage, a member of staff can identify developing trouble and alert the Security Guards who can step in and stop the trouble from escalating. Essentially, it is important that you have a strong team working in collaboration.

Getting an SIA Licence to work within the security industry is essential. Without it, you cannot legally work in the sector and you will stand an excellent chance of being prosecuted for operating without a license. Equally, by employing an unlicensed security worker, a business owner is opening their business up to be prosecuted for illegally employing the worker. The decision to require the security industry to have these standards in place was taken because of people not doing the job properly, which damaged the reputation of the vast majority of security workers who were operating well within the law. SIA Training will allow you to show that you are determined to follow the better example.
