Where to Look for Security Jobs

15 August 2009

Although the current financial malaise affecting the country and most of the world has left a number of industries wondering about their futures, there are more than a few which are getting on with work and even adding staff. Among these, amid a potentially troubled summer for the UK, is the security industry. As things stand, there have been a number of newspaper articles putting the nation on notice that there are plans coming from all sorts of groups the foment a summer of protest.

Even viewed without the filter of media hyperbole there is a certain amount of legitimacy to the concerns about the summer which lies in wait. There is no small amount of anger being levelled at the government for a range of different reasons, and with a European election taking place as this article goes to press, the results of which may lead to further discontent, no-one can deny that there is potential for anger as time goes on. Although this is a situation that must cause everyone a little bit of concern, it does have an unexpected upside for trained security staff. There is likely to be more work for security professionals this summer than there has been for a long time.

Knowing where to look for work is the first step. Some companies and event organisers appoint their security staff in-house. If you know of an event near to you or within easy traveling distance that you would be prepared to work at, it is worth calling the organisers to find out what the security arrangements are and to whom you need to apply in order to find work. Contact details are generally on the website for each event.

Alternatively, you may find that there is more chance of you finding a job by applying to a dedicated security company. The largest company working in security in the United Kingdom right now is G4S (Group 4 Securicor). A major employer of security staff, G4S provides security guards, door supervisors and other SIA trained individuals to a range of companies and event organisers. It is also viewed as one of the best employers in the country from the point of view of its staff.

Additionally, companies like Securicor or local authorities are always looking for staff. As this summer draws in, there will undoubtedly be a rise in the need for well-trained security staff, and a job that begins as a summer based short-term contract could turn into something more permanent if all goes well. Asking at your local Jobcentre Plus or calling around companies and organisers is a good first step in finding the right position for you. In addition, clubs, pubs and other such venues tend to have a relatively high turnover of staff. With the volume of different venues within any given city there is a lot of scope for trained and dedicated individuals to find the job that suits them. Ask around people you know and have worked with before, too – you’d be surprised what comes up.
