Going Back To SIA Training School
One thing that freaks out adults more than any other is the idea of going back to school, sitting in a classroom and doing exams. We may fondly remember our school or university days for a number of reasons, but rarely do those reasons have anything to do with learning much. When it comes to going “back to school” in adult life, the most common emotion is fear – the very real fear of making an idiot out of yourself. Well, if it is any consolation, you will be in a room full of people worried about the self-same thing. However, it is not a situation where you are likely to have to remember homework or say “Yes Sir/Miss” as much as you once did. It is education, but practical education.
SIA Training is obligatory if you want to work in the UK security industry – no negotiating on the point, no questions, you must have it and you must have your SIA licence or you will not be allowed to work in the security sector. The penalties for illegally working in the sector include jail time – so if you are really that put out by the idea of sitting in a classroom, considering it to be like a prison, just think about the alternative and how it involves sitting in a very real prison. In fact, bear in mind that as an adult, you will be in that classroom for something you really want. Keep in mind the end goal and it will make things a lot easier in the long run.
So what about the exam? No-one likes sitting exams, but the fact is that everything you need to know will be covered in the classroom before you sit the test. The topics will, in general, be things that you already knew, but the exam will simply require you to answer a few simple situational and procedural questions. It really is worth doing, because once you pass that test you will be able to apply for a range of jobs in the security sector. Your SIA licence will be posted to you and you will be able to start work whenever you want.
Many people find, in fact, that training is often a lot more fun than they expected it to be and a world away from the experience of sitting in a classroom as a child. A training course allows you to socialise with people of a common interest to you who have the same goals – and may in fact know of job openings that could be helpful to you.
This is the crux of the matter – you may or may not enjoy the classroom situation and you may or may not enjoy sitting exams. But the camaraderie that can be fostered by an SIA training course may come in very useful later on and the difference it makes to your employment prospects really are impossible to deny. For this reason you should make enquiries now on getting licensed and getting started in the industry.
