Theres more to having an SIA Licence than You Think
The public perception of the security industry is rising in popularity, in many aspects this comes about because of the accountability that those in the security have placed upon them through the Security Industry Authority. Accountability is good, because it brings about a professional industry that strives to meet the needs of the community. But there is still a certain element who wants to take part in the security industry without taking the necessary steps to become accredited and obtain an SIA Licence. The Security Industry Authority brought about the SIA licence to ensure that all those within the security industry have the skills and abilities to become effective and professional security providers.
There are many training providers who provide the accredited training required to meet the demands of obtaining an SIA licence, but still many try and beat the system. The Security Industry Authority takes an active role in prosecuting those who seek to provide services in the security industry without holding the appropriate SIA licence. The list of those who have been successfully prosecuted by the SIA for not holding an SIA licence is growing daily and is a timely reminder for those without an SIA licence to take the steps necessary to get one.
The community looks at all of those involved in the security industry as being responsible for their safety and protection. While those participating in the security industry without an SIA licence are considered to be a minority, their participation in the industry without possessing the necessary skills and SIA licence affects the perception that the community has on the security industry as a whole. Security is a difficult job with a large knowledge and skill basis required by every security provider so that the industry remains professional, competent and most importantly highly regarded by the community. This can only come through the regulation of the security industry, which is a top priority for the Security Industry Association.
Those considering entering or remaining within the security industry without the necessary training and SIA licence have recently been put on notice by the SIA with the prosecution of a security director who failed to have the necessary SIA licence. The security industry has evolved over the years; the biggest change has been the requirement for regulation of the industry. There is good reason for the security industry becoming regulated, one of the most important reasons being the trust that the community has for security providers, the Security Industry Association has dedicated its investigative efforts to ensure that the community can retain their trust within the security industry. It is also a timely reminder for security providers within Northern Ireland to take the necessary accreditation steps so that they gain there SIA licence prior to the licensing enforcement date which has been proclaimed. SIA licensing brings accountability to the security industry, those who lack the accountability required for obtaining an SIA licence should consider the financial impacts that an SIA investigation will have upon them.
