Recently made redundant? Read on and succeed in a new direction
It’s an unfortunate fact, but there are currently thousands of people who are finding themselves vulnerable to cost cutting exercises in companies and many of the skilled individuals singled out for redundancy; voluntary or otherwise are over forty. One of the main reasons for this somewhat ageist plan is that as you become older you inevitably become more expensive especially in relation to pension payouts on retirement, but there is a solution to the inevitable difficulty of job-searches by training for an SIA Licence.
Despite having been made redundant, and your age, it doesn’t mean the end of the road for your career prospects; in fact there’s a whole list of positives in your favour. To start with you no doubt have an excellent track record of reliability, teamwork skills and a level headed approach to problem solving. All of these place you in an excellent position to apply for jobs in the security industry once you have your SIA Licence.
No one would blame you for thinking that; ‘re-training at this stage in my life is not an option’. That’s a fair reaction, but you’ll be surprised to know that training for your licence takes a maximum of four days and Get-Licensed UK have convenient training centres all over the UK so you won’t be out of pocket with travelling expenses or have to spend time away from home shacked-up in costly hotels or B’n’B’s.
Key areas you might want to consider for future training are as a CCTV Operative or as a Security Guard, all your past age related experience, IT skills and confidence will stand you in good stead for either of these roles within the security industry; which incidentally is one of the highest growth employment sectors in the UK right now.
There are some ill-informed sceptics around who label security industry jobs as dead-end roles, on the whole because their branding is based on the past. The level of training you’ll receive is determined by the Security Industry Authority which is monitored by the Home Office; given that this body [the SIA] has such a tangible, high-level responsibility there are no short-cut training tactics, in fact given that it’s now illegal to work in the security industry without an SIA Licence the training standards bar is very high – especially at Get-Licensed UK.
Tuition time is based on a continuous assessment process in scenario based situations during which our specialist instructors appraise your achievement and understanding of what the outcome requirements are. Although there is a time limit on the course, if your tutor decides you need further instruction in particular areas you’ll be informed – we won’t recommend you apply for your licence until we are certain you are confident enough to pass with flying colours; our reputation relies on your success and course satisfaction.
Taking into account all the above it’s easy to understand how your age-related skills give you the professional edge over the competition. Much of what you need to succeed in the security industry is a common sense approach, an appreciation for the safety of employees and the value of requisite business resources; these attributes are probably so unconscious you don’t even include them on your CV.
CVs are vital when applying for jobs, and reputable, prospective employers make their decisions based on a ratio of skill and initiative, and more often than not it’s enterprise that outweighs ability. There’s no shame in redundancy, but proving to employers that you had the foresight to react by making a negative into a positive makes their decision process straightforward and your CV is likely to end up at the top of the ‘must see’ pile.
