SIA Licence Training - What does it mean?
First we need to take a look at what the SIA Licence is all about. SIA stands for the Security Industry Authority; this is the regulating body that since 2003 have been responsible for regulating the Security Industry reporting to the Home Secretary.
The authority has two main objectives, one to oversee that high training standards are withheld within the security industry and the second of the SIA’s duties is to manage the Approved Contractor scheme. Let’s take a look at both of these responsibilities in more detail.
Contrary to popular belief, jobs in the Security Industry require a considerable amount of training and to ensure that these high standards are met the Security Industry Authority are in control of how high the bar has been raised over the past few years to ensure that employees are supported at every level. The qualifications for jobs such as Door Supervisors, Security Guards and Public Space surveillance or CCTV are not actually awarded by the SIA, their purpose is to monitor the principals of the training and endorse the qualifications.
To obtain an SIA Licence you need to be a minimum of eighteen years old and have passed the tests outlined at www.get-licenced.co.uk . In certain cases, such as cash or valuables in transit, key holding or the removal of vehicles criminal record checks may be made at the discretion of the employer or agency. Although the SIA are not responsible for making these checks they do maintain processes to ensure that licence holders are not illegal workers.
The Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS) is entirely voluntary and provides public sector employers with a recognised seal of approval managed by a team of representatives from all over the country. By displaying the ACS logo buyers of security services are assured that the services supplied are monitored to high standards and the employees are the best in the industry. SIA approved contractors have a responsibility to comply with the law and ensure that enforcement strategies are in place to prosecute offenders who do not act in accordance with the SIA Licence criteria.
