As a security operative you will naturally have been taught how to pre-empt and prevent incidents before they escalate to broader conflicts. In the same vein, you must also be prepared for workplace emergencies of varying degrees at any given time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The term \u2018emergency\u2019 is broadly described as a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation that requires immediate action. Within the workplace, situations and scenarios that pose a threat to the employees, the public or the environment; has the potential to cause major disruption; and causes a substantial amount of damage are considered as major incidents. Some examples of workplace emergencies include fires, flooding, power cuts, gas leakage, toxic spillage, accidents, assaults, severe crimes, bomb threats and suspicious packages.<\/p>\n

In the workplace, your first priority is human life, including your own. Everything else, including property comes secondary, after all possible danger to life has been dealt with.<\/p>\n

How to deal with an emergency situation<\/h3>\n

Regardless of the type of emergency, every security operative should follow the 10 actions identified below:<\/p>\n

    Raise the alarm.<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n

    Inform the public of the emergency.<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n
  3. \n
    Utilise on-site emergency response (i.e, use of fire extinguishers, etc.<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n
  4. \n
    Summon the emergency services (i.e., call 999 or 112)<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n
  5. \n
    Crowd management, including evacuation, where necessary<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n
  6. \n
    Evacuate people with disabilities.<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n
  7. \n
    Traffic management, including emergency vehicles<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n
  8. \n
    Incident control.<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n
  9. \n
    Liaise with emergency services.<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n
  10. \n
    Provide EMERGENCY first aid<\/a> and medical assistance.<\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    How to work in the security sector<\/h3>\n

    If you are interested in working in the security sector, whether it be as a Door Supervisor<\/a>, Security Guard<\/a> or CCTV Operative, you will need to obtain a SIA Licence<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    To obtain a SIA Licence<\/a>, you will need to complete a course. Once you have completed the course, will you then be able to apply for an SIA Licence and work in the security sector.<\/p>\n\n\n
