For years, one of the most significant challenges in the private security industry has been the pressure to stay quiet about non-compliance. That dynamic is about to shift fundamentally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 1 May 2026, a Statutory Instrument was laid in Parliament that will grant the Security Industry Authority (SIA) prescribed person status<\/a> under the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 (PIDA). Subject to final parliamentary scrutiny, this change takes effect on 2 June 2026. This is not just a bureaucratic update; it is a structural change to how the industry will be regulated from the ground up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Does “Prescribed Person” Status Actually Mean?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Under PIDA, a “prescribed person” is an officially recognised body to whom workers can make a legally protected disclosure. In other words, it is a safe, official channel for whistleblowing. The SIA joining this list means that if you report a genuine concern about unlawful activity in the private security industry to the SIA, you are legally protected from retaliation by your employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That protection covers dismissal, demotion, disciplinary action, or any other form of detriment. If an employer punishes you for making a protected disclosure, you have grounds for an employment tribunal claim. This aligns with broader shifts in employment rights and fair working conditions<\/a> across the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Can You Report?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The protection applies when you report information that you reasonably believe shows unlawful activity in the security industry. This could include guards working without a valid SIA licence<\/a>, employers falsifying training records or vetting documents, dangerous working conditions being concealed from regulators, or financial fraud within a security firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to note that to qualify for protection, you must reasonably believe that your disclosure is “in the public interest.” This generally means the wrongdoing impacts others, not just yourself, such as a danger to public safety at a venue or systemic exploitation of workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Should You Do Now?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The SIA has confirmed it will publish detailed guidance on how to submit a protected disclosure when the Instrument is formally commenced in June. For now, the most important step is to document anything you witness. Keep personal records, including dates, times, what you saw, and who was involved. When the official guidance drops, you will have the necessary information to act with the law on your side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
