Rosters at busy venues fill up fast in a normal year. This year, with the date itself already a weekend night, they’ll fill faster. Here’s how to get your name on the list before someone else does.

If you hold an SIA door supervisor licence and want to be on those rosters, now is the time to move. Here’s a practical plan for the next four weeks.

Why Halloween Is A Different Beast On The Door

A normal Saturday is busy. Halloween weekend is busier — and stranger. You get bigger crowds, more pre-loading, more first-time visitors to the venue, and a mix of costumes that can make even routine tasks harder.

Think about ID checks. When half the queue is dressed as vampires, clowns, or 1980s pop stars, matching a face to a driving licence photo takes longer. Bags are bigger. Coats are stranger. Props — fake weapons especially — need a firm, polite conversation before anyone gets through the door.

Add in later kick-outs, higher drink volumes, and the odd argument over who wore the better costume, and you have a shift that rewards experience and preparation.

Get On Agency Lists This Week, Not Next

Agencies build their Halloween rosters early. If you wait until mid-October, the good shifts at the busy venues will already be gone, and you’ll be left with the leftovers — or nothing.

What to do now:

Register or re-register with two or three local agencies. Don’t rely on one. If your main agency has no shifts on the Saturday night, your second choice might.

Make sure your paperwork is spotless. Licence in date, right-to-work documents ready, first aid certificate handy if you have one, bank details and NI number where the agency can find them. Missing paperwork is the fastest way to lose a shift to someone else.

Tell them exactly what you want. Nights, weekends, venue type, area, how far you’ll travel. Vague availability gets vague offers.

Reply fast. Bookers offer shifts to whoever answers the phone first. Keep your notifications on.

If You’re New To The Industry

Halloween can be a strong first weekend on the door — venues expand their teams and are more open to newer staff than they might be in a quieter month. But go in prepared. Shadow an experienced supervisor if the agency offers it. Ask about the venue’s search policy, refusal procedure, and radio protocol before you start, not on the night.

If you’re still finding your feet on where your powers actually start and stop, our breakdown of what a door supervisor can and can’t do is worth reading before your first shift, not during it.

What Venues Want In Seasonal Cover

When a venue manager takes on extra door staff for Halloween, they’re not looking for someone who’ll just fill a spot on the rota. They want people who make the night run smoother. That means:

A calm manner on the door. Long queues test everyone’s patience. Staff who can keep customers polite and moving are worth their weight in gold.

Sharp ID checking under pressure. Halloween queues move slowly enough already. You need to be quick but not sloppy.

Good judgement on refusals. Someone in a costume acting oddly might be drunk, might be in character, might be both. Read it right — our guide to conflict management for security officers is worth revisiting before a shift like this one.

Team players. You’ll be working alongside the venue’s regular team. Fit in, follow their lead on how they run the door, don’t try to reinvent their systems on shift one.

Handling The Halloween-Specific Stuff

Costumes and ID. Ask people to pull down masks or move face paint aside enough for you to compare against the licence photo. Do it politely, do it every time, and do it before they’ve paid the cover charge — not after, when they’ll argue. Our guide to asking for ID on the door covers what counts as valid proof of age if you need a refresher before a night like this one.

Props and fake weapons. Plastic knives, toy guns, oversized scythes. Set the venue’s rule with them at the door: some places allow soft props inside, others don’t allow any. Know the policy before your shift starts and apply it consistently. “He got in with his, why can’t I?” is the last conversation you want at 11pm. If it does come down to a proper search, our rundown of search criteria for door supervisors is worth knowing cold, not figuring out mid-shift.

Higher drink levels. Pre-loading is heavier on themed nights. Watch the queue as it approaches — swaying, slurring, someone being held up by friends. It’s far easier to refuse entry at the rope than to eject someone from the middle of a packed dancefloor an hour later.

Late surges and kick-out. With Halloween itself landing on a Saturday this year, expect the whole weekend to run busy, with some venues extending hours further still. Pace yourself. Hydrate. Eat before your shift, not during. A tired door supervisor at 3 am is no use to anyone.

For Experienced Door Staff Picking Up Extras

If you already have a regular venue, Halloween is a chance to add a shift or two on your nights off. A few tips:

Don’t burn yourself out. Working seven nights straight sounds good on payday and terrible by Sunday morning.

Be honest with agencies about which venue you already work. Some clients won’t book staff who work for a direct competitor down the road.

Keep a note of every shift, hours worked, and pay rate agreed. Chasing an agency for money in mid-November is a lot easier when you have the details written down.

Your Four-Week Checklist

This week: Register or update your details with two or three agencies. Check your licence expiry date.

Next week: Confirm availability for the Halloween weekend in writing. Ask about specific venues and pay rates.

Two weeks out: Get your kit sorted — boots, blacks, hi-vis if required, torch, notebook, pen, gloves for searches.

Halloween week: Confirm each shift the day before. Turn up early. Introduce yourself to the head door supervisor before the doors open.

Halloween weekend rewards the people who plan for it. Get your name on the lists, get your paperwork clean, and go into the shift knowing what you’re walking into. The work is there; you just have to be first in the queue for it.

Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday — the single busiest possible night of the week for it to land on, and venues know it.
