If you hold an SIA licence and want Christmas work, October is the month to get organised. Here are seven practical tips.

1. Move In October, Not December

Seasonal hiring generally follows the planning calendar rather than the shopping calendar. Budgets are typically agreed in late summer, contractors tender for work in the early autumn, and rotas are built before the busiest trading weeks. Exact timings vary by employer, so treat this as a general pattern rather than a fixed deadline.

The practical result is that officers who apply in October are more likely to be considered for the main rota, while late applicants are more often offered ad-hoc cover. Our job search tips for licensed officers cover timing and standing out in more detail.

2. Get Your Paperwork Sorted First

Missing paperwork is a quick way to lose a shift to someone else. Before you apply anywhere, check three things:

Your licence is in date. Check your licence expiry date now, not when an agency asks.

Your first aid certificate is current. If it’s lapsed, Emergency First Aid at Work is the quickest fix.

Your right-to-work documents are ready. Since 1 October, right-to-work checks extend to agency workers and sub-contractors, so you may be asked to prove your status more than once. Our documents guide covers what to have to hand.

Have your bank details and National Insurance number ready too, so an agency can onboard you the same day.

3. Register With Several Agencies

Don’t rely on one. If your main agency has nothing on the Saturday before Christmas, your second or third choice might. Large retailers may also employ their own security teams, so check their careers pages directly.

Demand isn’t uniform. Contracts change, as in the reported cuts to security hours at some Asda stores, which we covered in our guide for retail officers. That’s another reason to register widely.

4. Match Your Licence To The Shift

Retail guarding is covered by an SIA Security Guard licence, and a Door Supervisor licence also covers security guarding. The reverse isn’t true: a Security Guard licence doesn’t allow you to work as a door supervisor at licensed premises. If you’re offered a Christmas party or venue shift, check which licence it needs before you accept.

Our comparison of retail security and venue security shows how the two roles differ, and the GOV.UK guidance sets out the licensing rules.

5. Be Specific About Your Availability

Vague availability gets vague offers. Tell agencies exactly what you can do: which dates, nights or weekends, how far you’ll travel, and whether you can cover Boxing Day and the January sales. “Available from 1 November, including weekends and bank holidays” tells a booker everything they need to know.

6. Reply Fast And Follow Up By Phone

Bookers often offer shifts to whoever responds first, so keep your notifications on. Agencies receive a lot of applications at this time of year, and a short, polite call to confirm they have yours can help yours stand out.

7. Ask The Right Pay Questions

Pay varies by region, employer and shift type. The legal floor is the National Living Wage, which is £12.71 an hour for workers aged 21 and over from 1 April 2026. Before you accept anything, ask:

Is holiday pay included in the hourly rate, or paid separately?

Is there an uplift for nights, Christmas Day, Boxing Day or bank holidays, and is it written into your contract?

Is a uniform provided?

These details can change your real hourly figure more than the headline rate does.

Once You’re On The Rota

Seasonal work is a chance to show you’re reliable. Turn up on time, stay calm in busy trading, follow your site’s procedures, and report incidents properly. Employers do keep seasonal staff who impress, though there’s no guarantee, so ask early whether year-round roles exist.

Not Licensed Yet?

Allow roughly four to eight weeks from booking a course to holding your licence. Our guide to how long an SIA licence takes breaks down the stages. You also need an in-date first aid certificate before you start Security Guard or Door Supervisor training. A course booked this month will probably leave you licensed in November or December, so aim for the later festive period and the January sales.

Book your security training course and start your SIA licence application as soon as you’ve passed to get one step closer to bagging a festival shift.

Retail and venue security teams tend to plan festive cover well before the Christmas lights go up, and the best shifts often go to officers who are ready early.
