Disability itself isn’t one of the SIA’s licence criteria. The questions come up in training, where your provider decides what support it can offer. This guide covers who does what, what you can ask for, the one requirement that can’t be adjusted, and what to do if a provider says no.

Key Takeaways

The SIA’s guide for disabled people lists the licence criteria as age, identity, criminal record, right to work and a licence-linked qualification. A general medical or fitness test isn’t among them.

Under the Equality Act 2010, training providers must make reasonable adjustments.

The SIA doesn’t assess or arrange adjustments. Your training provider does.

Door supervisors must be able to demonstrate physical intervention skills. The SIA says there are no exemptions.

If a provider refuses help, you can go to the awarding organisation, then Ofqual.

The SIA qualifications consultation closes on Friday 23 October 2026, and anyone can respond.

Can You Get An SIA Licence With A Disability?

The SIA’s guide for disabled people (published in 2018 and still listed on GOV.UK) lists what you need for a front line licence: be 18 or over, pass identity and criminal record checks, hold the right licence-linked qualification, and have the right to work in the UK. Our SIA licence guide covers each step.

There’s one health-related question. The SIA asks whether you’ve been detained or subject to another compulsory measure under the Mental Health Act 1983 in the last five years. Its licensing criteria say it doesn’t seek out mental health problems that haven’t involved compulsory measures, and that a current medical report may be needed if they have.

Some roles don’t need a licence at all. GOV.UK says in-house security staff generally don’t need one, but door supervisors do.

Who Arranges Adjustments?

A reasonable adjustment changes how you’re taught or assessed so a disability doesn’t put you at a substantial disadvantage. Responsibility is split:

Your training provider considers your request and decides what it can offer.

The awarding organisation certifies the qualification and sets the rules the provider works within. Each awarding organisation has its own policy.

Ofqual regulates awarding organisations.

The SIA sets the training standards but doesn’t deliver training or assess adjustments.

The SIA’s FOI response says the provider assesses adjustments if it’s notified of a learner with a disability. So tell your provider before you book.

Adjustments You Can Ask For In Exams

What’s available depends on the awarding organisation and the qualification. As an example, Highfield’s policy lists these for exams:

A provider can agree itself: extra time of up to 25%, supervised rest breaks, a change to the exam room, coloured overlays or low-vision aids, and a scribe.

Needs awarding organisation approval: a reader, enlarged materials, an alternative venue and assistive software.

Two limits apply. Highfield says an adjustment mustn’t compromise the assessment requirements or give an unfair advantage, and a reader can’t explain words or lead you towards answers. Nothing is automatic. Your provider assesses your individual need.

If you’re dyslexic or neurodivergent, bring any evidence you have. Highfield’s application form lists examples such as an assessment report, a medical certificate and an Education, Health and Care Plan. Our guide to neurodiversity in security covers the wider picture.

Some parts of training must be done in person, which affects what can be adjusted. Our guide to doing SIA training online explains which.

First Aid Training

You need an in-date first aid qualification before door supervisor or security guard training. The SIA’s guidance for providers says they can make reasonable adjustments if someone can’t complete all of the first aid training because of a mental or physical disability. It points to guidance from the First Aid Awarding Organisation Forum. The SIA’s learner Q&A tells learners to speak to their training provider about adjustments.

What Can’t Be Adjusted: Physical Intervention For Door Supervisors

Door supervisors must be able to demonstrate physical intervention skills to pass the qualification. In a March 2026 FOI response, the SIA said a learner who can’t demonstrate these safety-critical skills can’t pass the assessment or apply for or renew a door supervisor licence, and that there are no exemptions. That request came from a door supervisor who had become a wheelchair user. The SIA pointed them to other roles.

The SIA’s older guide says the provider decides whether a reasonable adjustment can enable you to do the demonstration. If none can, you won’t get the qualification. If you’re unsure, ask your provider before you pay.

Which Licence Might Suit You?

Licence

Physical elements

Notes

Door supervisor

Physical intervention demonstration and at least one physical search

No exemption from physical intervention

Security guard

At least one physical search

No physical intervention unit in the qualification

CCTV operator

A practical demonstration of CCTV surveillance skills using equipment

No physical intervention unit. Raise it with the training provider first. If you’re not satisfied, escalate to the awarding organisation. If you’re still not satisfied, you can contact Ofqual. Keep your request and every reply together.

What The 2027 Changes Could Mean For You

The SIA is consulting on changes to licence-linked qualifications until 23 October 2026, with new qualifications expected later in 2027. Several proposals could matter to disabled learners:

First aid as a licence condition, with a new security-specific first aid qualification.

A new post-licence standard in advanced physical intervention skills, which the SIA asks should be voluntary or compulsory.

Improved training on searching wheelchairs and other mobility devices.

A new independent English language test.

The SIA’s announcement doesn’t say how adjustments would work under these proposals. It invites responses from anyone with an interest, including front line licence holders and the public, so if they affect you, say so. The SIA asks about compulsory detention or other compulsory measures under the Mental Health Act 1983 in the last five years, and may ask for a medical report in that case.

Can I get help with costs or equipment once I’m in work?

You may be able to get an Access to Work grant. The SIA’s guide says you need a paid job or be about to start one, the grant doesn’t have to be paid back, and you may not qualify if you receive certain benefits. Check the current rules on GOV.UK. Our guide to reasonable adjustments at work covers the employer side.

Which security job is best if I can’t do physical intervention? That depends on the person.
