Could those skills help you move into hotel security? Yes—but deciding whether the work suits you comes before choosing a course.

This guide is for hospitality workers considering their first hotel security role. If you already work in a hotel, you may be changing departments rather than leaving the industry altogether.

Key Takeaways

You don’t have to be a hospitality manager to explore hotel security. Employers set their own experience requirements.

Guest service and communication can transfer. Security responsibilities still require training and an understanding of your limits.

Compare the actual pay, hours and duties with your current job before deciding.

Match your training to the role, complete the relevant licence application and apply for jobs that fit your experience.

Why Consider Moving into Hotel Security?

Think about the parts of your current job you’d like to do more often. Perhaps you enjoy solving guest problems, noticing when something needs attention or coordinating with colleagues. Hotel security could let you build a role around those interests.

For a waiter, the appeal might be moving from food service into work focused on safety, observation and responding to incidents. For a receptionist, it could be the opportunity to develop the security side of a familiar hotel environment. Neither move is automatically a promotion; the right choice depends on the job on offer and what you want from it.

There is an employer connection here. In a vacancy checked on 21 October 2026, The Savoy asked for hospitality experience and a Door Supervisor licence. The St. Regis London’s security role also combined a licence requirement with hospitality experience and guest-service skills. These are examples of employer expectations, not a promise that either vacancy will remain open or that every hotel recruits in the same way.

Compare the Whole Job, Not Just the Salary

Before making a move, put the two roles side by side:

Pay: compare basic earnings, tips or service charge, overtime arrangements and benefits. Check which amounts are guaranteed.

Hours: compare contracted hours, shift length, weekends and travel after late finishes.

Work: consider how you feel about patrols, detailed reporting, enforcing rules and responding when someone needs help.

Progression: ask what training and supervisory opportunities the employer actually offers.

Divide annual basic pay by contracted annual hours when comparing different working patterns. A higher annual salary may come with more hours. Keep variable tips or service charge separate so you can see what your regular income would depend on.

Hotel security may still involve nights, weekends and demanding guest interactions. The Savoy example specified rotating 12-hour day and night shifts. If your main aim is to leave those working patterns behind, check the rota carefully before committing.

What Does a Hotel Security Officer Actually Do?

The role combines guest service with responsibility for safety and security. In the St. Regis example, duties included patrols, access control, incident reporting and supporting emergency procedures. It also emphasised warm, discreet guest interactions.

Picture a guest arriving late who needs help, a contractor trying to enter a restricted area or a colleague reporting an unusual situation. You need to communicate clearly, follow the hotel’s procedures and know when to involve someone else.

A useful question for the hiring manager is: “What does an ordinary shift involve, and what would I be expected to handle independently?” The answer tells you more than the job title alone.

Does Your Current Hospitality Position Matter?

You don’t need to wait until you become a manager before exploring the move. What matters is whether you can demonstrate the skills and experience a particular employer asks for.

Waiting and Bar Work

You may already have examples of listening carefully, staying composed during a disagreement and passing important information to a supervisor. Explain what you did and why it helped.

That experience can support your application, but serving a difficult customer is different from taking responsibility for a security incident. Your training and the employer’s procedures will define how you should respond in the new role.

Reception and Concierge Work

Handling guest enquiries, protecting confidential information and coordinating with other departments can provide useful examples. You may also be familiar with the hotel’s layout and how different teams work together.

Be precise about your responsibilities. Helping a guest with a room-access problem does not, by itself, make you an experienced security officer.

Night and Duty Management

Handovers, recording incidents and deciding who to contact may already be part of your job. Those examples can help demonstrate judgement and organisation.

Management experience is useful where relevant, but it doesn’t replace a required security qualification or licence.

Whatever your background, avoid assuming that every hotel role is open to security beginners. Some vacancies require previous security experience; others place more emphasis on hospitality experience. Read the essential criteria before paying for training specifically to pursue that job.

Which SIA Licence Would You Need?

There isn’t a separate “hotel security licence”. The relevant SIA licence depends on the work you’ll do and how you’re employed.

The SIA’s licensing guidance distinguishes contracted security work from direct, in-house employment. In-house security usually does not require a licence, but door supervision at licensed premises is an exception.

Employers can also make a licence a hiring requirement. That is why a vacancy’s wording matters alongside the legal rules. The Savoy example specifically required a Door Supervisor licence.

A Door Supervisor licence also covers security guarding work. It can therefore be relevant to more than a hotel’s entrance; see the wider jobs you can do with a Door Supervisor licence.

If a job includes CCTV duties, check the precise activities with the employer against the SIA guidance. A Door Supervisor licence does not cover every use of CCTV. Ask the employer to clarify an advert that simply says “SIA licence required” before choosing your course.

How to Make the Transition

1. Start with Jobs You Could Realistically Apply for

Read several hotel security vacancies within commuting distance. Note the required licence, experience, shift pattern and essential qualifications. Separate “essential” from “desirable”.

If your hotel has a security team, ask about internal opportunities and the experience they look for. An informal conversation can help you understand the role before committing to a change.

2. Check Eligibility and Plan the Full Cost

Before booking, review the SIA application requirements. Applicants must be at least 18; the SIA also checks matters including identity, criminal history and the right to work. Completing training does not guarantee licence approval.

Budget for the course, any required first aid training, the separate licence application fee, travel and time away from paid work. Use the current fee and course price when planning rather than relying on an old advert.

3. Complete the Appropriate Training

If the roles you want require a Door Supervisor licence, take the full qualification for new entrants. Refresher training is for existing licence holders renewing, rather than a shortcut into the occupation.

For Door Supervisor training, you need a suitable first aid qualification with at least 12 months remaining when training starts. Check any existing certificate with the provider. Get Licensed offers Emergency First Aid at Work training.

Check the course dates, attendance requirements, assessments and what is included before booking. A course gives you a foundation; you’ll still need to learn the hotel’s own systems and procedures.

4. Apply for the Licence

After you pass, the awarding organisation must notify the SIA of your qualification before you can submit your application. Follow the SIA’s qualification and application guidance.

Allow time for checks and be clear with recruiters about your status. Do not describe yourself as licensed while your application is pending, or start duties that legally require a licence before it is granted.

5. Show How Your Experience Fits

Use genuine examples on your CV. Rather than writing “excellent under pressure”, describe a relevant situation, your action and the outcome.

For example, if you dealt with a guest complaint, explain how you listened, clarified the issue and involved the right colleague. Use that structure only for something you actually did. Avoid turning ordinary service duties into claims of security experience.

Prepare examples of teamwork, accurate handovers and following procedures. Our guide to preparing for a security interview can help you organise your answers.

6. Check the Offer and Induction

Before accepting, confirm the pay, contracted hours, shifts, location and any experience or licence conditions. Ask how the hotel introduces new officers to access systems, incident reporting and emergency procedures.

This is also the time to establish who supports you on shift and what decisions need a supervisor. A clear induction helps you put your training into practice.

Is It the Right Next Step for You?

The move makes sense when you’re interested in the responsibilities, the working pattern suits your life and you have a realistic route into the jobs you want.

If your main goal is better pay or progression, compare hotel security with hospitality supervisory roles too. There’s no need to abandon experience you enjoy using. You’re deciding where to build on it.

Once you’ve checked the role requirements and chosen the Door Supervisor route, take the next step towards hotel security: book a Door Supervisor course , and once you’ve gotten your licence, start exploring security roles near you.

You’re used to reading a room, helping guests and keeping your composure when a shift gets busy.
