The Level 3 Award in Education and Training Course, also known as the AET Course, is your accredited introduction to teaching in post-16 education. To obtain the linked qualification or Level 3 Award, you will need to complete the AET Training Course and pass the assessments.

Having an Award in Education and Training is often a basic requirement for teaching positions in post-16 education. Note on previous course name

The Award in Education qualification was formally known as Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector or PTLLS. The training course was revised in 2013 and is now known as the Level 3 Award in Education and Training Course. 

Course Content for Level 3 Award in Education and Training

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training Course is 3-days long and introduces you to the basic principles of teaching. The course aims to increase confidence and encourage teachers to be more engaging. 

You are expected to have strong numeracy and literacy skills, as well as access to a computer in order to submit assessed coursework. 

The AET Course consists of 3 units:

  • Unit A: understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training, including inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training

  • Unit B: facilitate learning and development for individuals and groups

  • Unit C: understanding assessment in education and training, including principles and practices of assessment

Assessments for Level 3 Award in Education and Training Course

To obtain your Level 3 Award in Education and Training, you will need to successfully complete the assessments. The AET Training Course is assessed by a practical exam and 3 pieces of coursework.


  • Practical assessment: you will be required to conduct a 15 minute classroom session on the 3rd and last day of the AET Training Course. This is called "Micro Teach" and will be recorded for assessment purposes. Planning and preparation will be covered as part of the course. Upon completion, you will be receive useful feedback from your trainer. 

  • Written assessments: there are 3 written assessments - one for each unit (see above). You will be required to submit around 1000 words on each unit. Further guidance will be provided during your course by your trainer.

The AET Course is assessed in 2 parts. The first part is a practical assessment which is called "Micro Teach". This involves planning a 15 minute lesson on day 2 of the course, followed by presenting it to the class and instructor on day 3. The second part of the assessment consists of submitting 3 written assignments. These assignments are each around 1000-1500 words and on the 3 units that you cover during the course. You are required to submit these via email. Support, advice and changes will be provided by your instructor. We recommend writing and submitting the assignments as close to the AET Course as possible, as material will still be fresh in your mind.
