Who is a work coach?

Your work coach is the adviser at the Jobcentre who manages your claim and meets you about finding work. Every Universal Credit claimant has one. Work coaches decide who gets money from the Flexible Support Fund, so your work coach is the person to ask.

Your work coach needs

1. A quote with the course and price. 2. Our details. 3. Evidence security work is your goal. This letter covers the first two.

The Door Supervisor course needs a First Aid certificate.

Four routes that pay for security training

Every Jobcentre

Flexible Support Fund

A discretionary fund held by every Jobcentre. Your work coach decides. There is no application form: you ask at your appointment with a quote letter. It can cover the course, the £204 licence fee, travel and kit, and the Jobcentre pays the provider directly.

London

Adult Skills Fund

The Mayor's fund covers the full course cost for Londoners who are unemployed or earn below the London Living Wage. It also pays the £204 SIA licence fee and the required First Aid course.

Combined authority areas

Mayoral skills funds

Greater Manchester, South Yorkshire, the West Midlands and other combined authorities run their own adult skills funds that cover licence-to-practise courses. Ask your work coach or local skills service.

On Universal Credit

Security work academies

Sector-based Work Academy Programmes run for up to six weeks, cost you nothing and end with a guaranteed interview. Security academies run across England and Scotland. Ask your work coach if one runs near you.

“I want to work in security. I have a quote letter from a training provider. Can the Flexible Support Fund cover my SIA course?”

You can train full time for up to 16 weeks on Universal Credit when the course improves your job prospects. Say this if your work coach asks about your availability.

Help centre
Your work coach is the adviser at the Jobcentre who manages your claim and meets you about finding work. Every Universal Credit claimant has one. Work coaches decide who gets help from the Flexible Support Fund, so they are the person to ask about funded training.
The Flexible Support Fund is a pot of discretionary money held by every Jobcentre Plus office. Work coaches use it to remove barriers to work, and that includes paying for short vocational training such as SIA courses, the £204 licence fee, travel and kit. There is no public application form. You ask your work coach at an appointment.
It can. The Flexible Support Fund can cover the £204 licence application fee alongside the course. In London, the Adult Skills Fund pays the licence fee and the First Aid course for eligible learners as standard.
You ask in person. The Flexible Support Fund has no online application. Book a Jobcentre appointment, bring your quote letter from this page, and ask your work coach directly.
Three things: a quote with the course name and price, the training provider's details, and evidence that security work is your goal, such as a job advert that asks for an SIA licence. The letter on this page covers the first two.
Most people pick the SIA Door Supervisor course. Employers prefer it because it covers door work, events, retail and static guarding, so it opens the widest range of jobs. It costs £259.99 plus £99.99 for the required First Aid certificate.
Training takes 3 to 6 days with same-day results. The SIA licence application then takes around 3 weeks. Most people are job ready within 3 weeks of finishing their course, and we connect you to live security jobs.
Ask your work coach what evidence would change the decision, and ask about a Sector-based Work Academy near you. You can also apply to our hardship fund, or spread the cost with a payment plan.
