Let’s have a frank chat, security professionals. If you’re in your security job solely for the money, you might find yourself disappointed. But if you’re here to make a real difference, to be part of something bigger than yourself, then buckle up โ€“ we’ve got some truth bombs to drop.

Yes, the pay in the security industry isn’t always great. We know it, you know it, and it’s a valid concern. But let’s put things in perspective for a moment.

Think about our military personnel, risking their lives in far-flung corners of the world. Or nurses, working gruelling shifts to save lives. Firefighters, rushing into burning buildings while others run out. Their pay packets? Often not much fatter than yours.

Here’s the brutal truth: If you’re obsessed with making big money, you’re in the wrong job. Go become an investment banker or try your luck at a casino. Security jobs arenโ€™t about getting rich quick.

But here’s the million-pound question: Do you see your role as meaningful?

Why Security Jobs Are About More Than Just Money

When you stop a fight from breaking out at a pub, potentially saving someone from serious injury, is that meaningful?

When you spot a suspicious package and your quick action prevents a potential tragedy, is that meaningful?

When a lost child finds comfort in your presence until their parents are located, is that meaningful?

If you answered ‘no’ to these, then maybe it’s time for some soul-searching. Because your security job, at its core, isn’t about the money. It’s about purpose.

You’re not just a uniform standing in a corner. You’re a guardian, a protector, often the first line of defence against chaos and crime. You’re the unsung hero who ensures people can go about their daily lives feeling safe and secure.

The Meaningful Impact of Being a Security Professional

Don’t get me wrong โ€“ fair pay is important, and the security industry needs to keep pushing for better compensation. But if money is your only motivation, you’re missing the bigger picture.

Ask yourself: Why did you choose this career? Was it just for the paycheck, or was there a part of you that wanted to make a difference?

Remember, we often fixate on money when our work lacks meaning. So, if you’re constantly grumbling about the pay, it might be time to reconnect with the purpose of your role in security.

Every shift, you have the opportunity to positively impact someone’s life. As a private security officer, you play a critical role in the safety of communities, businesses, and individuals. You have the power to prevent crimes, protect the vulnerable, and be the calm in the storm when things go wrong.

Is Security Work Right for You?

Is working as a security guard or a door supervisor always glamorous? No. Is it often thankless? Absolutely. But is it important? Unquestionably.

So, here’s the challenge: For the next week, forget about the pay. Instead, focus on the impact you’re making. Count the smiles you’ve brought, the potential incidents you’ve prevented, the people you’ve helped feel safe.

At the end of that week, ask yourself again: Is my security job meaningful?

If the answer is still no, then perhaps it’s time to consider a career change. Because security work isn’t just a job โ€“ it’s a calling. It’s for those who understand that true wealth isn’t always measured in pounds and pence, but in the lives you touch and the differences you make.

Yes, we should continue to advocate for fair pay. But never forget that what you do matters, profoundly and fundamentally. You’re not just earning a living โ€“ you’re protecting lives, safeguarding communities, and contributing to the very fabric of a safe society.

Advocating for Fair Pay While Building a Meaningful Security Career

Security Officers playing their role in creating a safe society while advocating for fair pay.

The security industry does need to do more to offer competitive wages. But even as you push for better pay, itโ€™s important to understand the meaningful nature of your work. Whether youโ€™re working in door supervision, retail security, or on large sites, the core of your job remains the same: you are the first line of defence for many people, and that is something to be proud of.

So, security professionals, ask yourself: Are you just here for the money, or are you here to make a difference?

The choice, and the mindset, is yours.
