If you’ve been thinking about getting your SIA licence or renewing an existing one, now is the time to act. The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has announced that the temporary £20 rebate on licence applications is ending. From 1 April 2026, the cost of an SIA licence application will go up.

      This isn’t a drill; it’s a hard deadline.

So, what’s changing, why is it happening, and what do you need to do to save yourself £20? Let’s break it down.

What’s Actually Changing with the SIA Licence Fee?

First, let’s be clear: the official SIA licence fee isn’t actually increasing. It’s been £204 since April 2023. What’s changing is that the £20 rebate that has been automatically applied to all applications since 2020 is now being removed.

      • Before 1 April 2026: You pay £184 for a licence application.
      • On or after 1 April 2026: You pay £204 for a licence application.

This change affects all SIA licence applications, whether it’s your first time applying or you’re renewing an existing licence. It also applies to all sectors, including Door Supervisor, Security Guard, and CCTV Operator licences.

      Why Is the Rebate Ending?

According to the official announcement from the SIA, the rebate was funded by historical financial reserves that the SIA had built up before April 2020. Those reserves have now been fully used up.

As SIA Chief Executive Michelle Russell explained, the regulator has a responsibility to cover the full cost of its services. She also pointed out that even at £204, the licence fee is still significantly cheaper in real terms than it was when licensing began in 2004. Back then, a licence cost £190, which would be £347 today if adjusted for inflation.

So, while it feels like a price hike, the SIA has actually been subsidising the cost for the last six years.

What This Means for You: The Clock Is Ticking

This is a simple matter of timing. If you want to save £20 on your SIA licence application, you need to get your application submitted and paid for before the 1 April 2026 deadline.

Remember, getting your licence isn’t just about filling out a form. You need to complete your training first. A typical SIA training course takes a few days to a week to complete, and then you need to factor in time for your certificate to be issued before you can even start your licence application.

Don’t wait until the last week of March to book your course. Training centres will be fully booked as people rush to beat the deadline. If you want to guarantee you get trained, certified, and have your application submitted in time, you need to act now.
