Why Do Window Cleaners Need A Licence To Clean Windows?

Most people think that being a window cleaner is simply a case of grabbing a bucket and sponge, but actually, there is a lot more to it than just having a spare set of ladders.

Window cleaners in Scotland have to go through a criminal background check and acquire a window cleanersโ€™ licence before they are even authorised to clean a window.

And with good reason, washing peopleโ€™s windows and gaining access to property allows those operating as window cleaners to come in to contact with elderly and vulnerable persons within the community.

Not only can this post a safeguarding risk, but also allows potential crime to take place.

As it currently stands, anyone operating in the profession of window cleaning must apply for a window cleanersโ€™ licence. All applicants are subject to a police background check, have to pay a fee and produce a certificate of insurance for public liability.

While all this may seem like a pretty big chore just to wash a few windows, these steps have been taken in relation to an increase in window cleaner related crime from 2014 in Scotland. During these incidents, those functioning as window cleaners were seen attempting to break into properties, often winning over the trust of victims over a long period of time.

Individuals operating as window cleaners have also been found to be working while under caution or with previous criminal convictions. These convictions range from sexual assault to burglary.

The window cleaners licence ensures that householders are protected at all times and that those working as window cleaners are fully vetted and trustworthy.

Anyone can grab a sponge and say that they are a self-certified window cleaner, but if they do not have a window cleanersโ€™ licence, they could find themselves paying a hefty fine of ยฃ2,500. Authorised window cleaners must also wear an identification badge issued by their local council or carry their window cleanersโ€™ licence with them at all times.
