Have you chosen to become a Door Supervisor? If you answered yes to the above question then it is crucial that others see you as employable within that field. While door supervisor training is an important step, there are other aspects of your personality that come into play as well.

When the time comes for you to start your search for the perfect job, there are certain character traits that employers may look out for. So the question is: what are some of the most important aspects of being a doorman? We’ve come up with six. Here they are.

      1. Friendly yet assertive

A good doorman is always friendly. But if he allows people to take advantage of his friendliness, problems may arise later down the line. That’s why employers seek out and hire doormen who are assertive. Assertiveness is a character trait means that you will be respectful of everyone you come across, but will still lay down the rules if the moment calls for it. An assertive doorman knows how to enforce the rules of admission without coming across as belligerent or rude. Make sure this side of your character is visible when you apply for your doorman position.

      2. The bigger the better

It goes without saying that most doormen are big individuals. You will have more of a chance of getting hired if your physique is large, but not all doormen need to be big in order to get ahead. When we say ‘big’, we’re talking about a big, confident personality. Confidence will go a long way to securing that doorman job you’ve been eyeing. So even if you’re not the biggest guy for the job, make it clear that you’re certainly the most confident.

      3. Quick and resourceful

A successful doorman is someone who thinks on his feet and knows how to act in any situation. While some of this comes with experience, even newbie doormen can make it known to their potential employers that they are prepared for any circumstance. A great way to do this is by keeping a notebook of important emergency numbers on hand. Furthermore, let your potential new employer know that you are the type of person who knows how to respond if a situation gets out of hand.

      4. Taking care of yourself

In addition to checking that you have a valid door supervisor licence, your potential employer will also want to see that you’re a healthy individual. Exercise, healthy eating, and a regular gym routine are all important aspects of the job. Let them know that you’ve not only undergone training for what you do, but also take care of yourself with the same dedication you plan to take care of them.

      5. Keenly observant

Are you the kind of person who sees things before others do? If you are, then make this known in your interview. People who hire doormen are looking for individuals who are always on the lookout for the potentially risky situations. It’s so easy to fall into a mundane routine where you simply stand outside and let people in, so being constantly alert is a valuable characteristic.

      6. The peacemaker

Ironically, even though doormen should be ready for possible conflict, they should also inherently be peacemakers. A peacemaker is someone who would rather achieve resolution through reason & dialogue as opposed to his fists. If you’re someone who would prefer to resolve conflict peacefully, then you’ll be seen as a valuable asset by your potential future employers.

These are the types of characteristics you can adopt into your life if you’re looking to become a doorman or become a better doorman.
