How NOT to be Drunk at Work on National Beer Day

Hello all you Beer lovers. With National Beer Day here (you know, that national day of alcohol and justifiably excuse to get sozzled) youโ€™re probably thinking that now would be the most appropriate day to down a pint (or two) and let that beer belly proudly hang out. And to be honest, as this is the weekend you are probably intoxicated while squinting confusingly into your iPhone and reading this.

Letโ€™s just hope that you arenโ€™t due to work the door this evening.

You see, while we all love a drink (or two) during our downtime and days off, itโ€™s surprising to learn that nearly a third of UK workers have admitted to being drunk at work or having their capacity for work significantly diminished through alcohol, at least once a week according to a survey.

Yes, you read that correctly, drunk and absolutely wasted on the job, and a staggering once a week also.
Working in the security sector, especially working the doors of a bar or club, being with radius of plastered and incapable party goers out on the lash is part and parcel of the job. But a drunk doorman telling a member of the public that they canโ€™t come in because they are tipsy, not only reeks of hypocrisy (and is illegal) but the lingering smell of alcohol doesnโ€™t make you look good either.

To be honest, many, if not all that work within the security sector are the most dedicated and professional people that you will meet while queuing up in line waiting to be frisked and asked for ID. And while dealing with drunk and legless people can be challenging (and annoying) itโ€™s often the case that those that have to deal with people who canโ€™t handle their drink donโ€™t mimic their woozy actions.

In the survey of 2,600 workers by Protecting.co.uk, it was revealed that 14 per cent of workers who had to operate machinery admitted to drinking alcohol at lunchtime, while 85 per cent, said that they had been drunk at work at some point in the last year.

While many of us have gotten absolutely hammered over the weekend and decided to spend our Mondayโ€™s in bed while trying not to regurgitate that cheeky Nandoโ€™s over the weekend, itโ€™s shocking to learn that alcohol-related sickness absences alone cost the UK economy over ยฃ1.9 billion a year, accounting for 5 per cent of all workplace absence.

So, while we donโ€™t want to be a kill joy on the joyous occasion that is National Beer Day, we do recommend on drinking responsible, even if those 2 for 1 Weatherspoon offers are tempting, itโ€™s best to be safe and sober then an out of work alcoholic.
