Recent changes from 2021
Following recent changes to improve public safety and utilise security personnel’s skills, additional skills are learned on the SIA course. From April 2021, you must also be competent in First Aid, which means holding at least an Emergency First Aid At Work certification, a one-day course.
New changes have also extended the scope of the knowledge that is now covered, which addresses many issues related to public safety, including spiking.
- Dealing with an allegation of sexual assault as a security professional
- Recognising the moral and/or legal obligation to ensure public safety
- Knowledge of date rape drugs such as GHB that are often used in spiking incidents to aid a sexual assault
- Identifying factors that make a person vulnerable to abuse or has been abused
- Understanding the actions that should be taken to protect a vulnerable person
- Monitoring behaviours that are used by sexual predators, such as buying drinks, watching unsupervised drinks and skirting with mobile phones
- Knowing when it is appropriate to call the assistance of a taxi, friend or when the police should be called
- The following of the correct procedures regarding the organisation’s policies and recording details and information for police reports.
