Conflict Management Training forms an important feature of many SIA Licensing requirements. As the security industry within the UK evolves into one of the best regulated private security industries in the world, the need for upgrading and having a good training program has also risen sharply.

Who is the SIA?

SIA (Security Industry Authority) as the body in charge of setting the rules and regulations governing the UK’s private security industry has come across as a very active body in monitoring as well as improving the set standards on a regular basis.

In its endeavour to create a reliable and respected security industry that helps maintain a secure environment within private licensed facilities, SIA has laid down very strict requirements that each security professional serving in these facilities has to have received proper training as well as hold a valid SIA Licence that qualifies them for holding the job. The licenses too are specialised and each specialisation requires its own licence and has a specially designed training format that leads up to it.

Just like SIA has created high standards for those intending to serve as security operatives, it has also formulated high levels of requirements for those who wish to provide training to those interested in joining this field and applying for an SIA Licence.

Conflict management in security

One such requirement for the trainers of Physical Intervention as well as the Trainers of Conflict Management is to have received proper training in Conflict Management as per the rules and requirements of the Security Industry Authority.

The term Conflict Management by itself announces the purpose of having received this training, as the skills that are imparted during Conflict Management Training are essential for most front-line security staff that perform duty in licensed private facilities. Conflicts can happen at the spur of the moment, or, as a build-up of certain smaller events that take place. The ability to detect, and properly handle any conflict is then obviously very important for maintaining security and a conducive environment for business and entertainment within these facilities.

The requirements are based on simple logic, if the trainers are going to impart skills for conflict management, then they should have the proper knowledge and training themselves which they can then pass on to those aspiring to build a career as Door Supervisors and Security Guards in the private security industry of UK.

Within its requirements for trainers’ qualifications as well, SIA mentions that Conflict Management trainers need to possess either an Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Certificate in Conflict Management Training or a City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate for Deliverers of Conflict Management Training before qualifying as approved trainers in the field. SIA as a regulatory body has always been very strict and enforces rules to the full in order to maintain the high standards it has achieved in the private security industry in the UK.

Trainers of Physical Intervention Skills too need to undergo Conflict Management Training and must possess a suitable level 3 qualification in conflict management training.

Conflict Management by itself is a highly specialised field and teaches security operatives to effectively build problem recognition and problem-solving talents. It aims to impart the skill to predict conflicts and the measures that are necessary to be taken in order for a fast, effective and safe resolution of the conflict or proper handling of elements causing the conflict.

What will you learn in conflict management training?

The training and talent developed during conflict management training are based on the principle of allowing security operatives to turn conflict situations into constructive situations and learning opportunities.

New SIA rules require candidates for Door Supervision to have attended and acquired skills of physical intervention, and in order to train them, the trainers themselves need to possess proper Level 3 Conflict Management qualifications.

The course in Conflict Management generally covers the following:

Unit 1 – Understanding the Principles of Conflict Management

  • Assess and reduce the risk of violence in the work environment.
  • Identify behaviour that indicates an escalation towards violence and take appropriate measures to avoid or calm and defuse the situation.
  • Identify post-incident support and report the circumstances to provide information for personal and organisational learning.
  • Demonstrate their ability to apply conflict management knowledge and understanding to various practice settings.

Unit 2 – Designing and delivering Conflict Management scenarios

  • Design relevant and effective scenarios for training in Conflict Management
  • Deliver and debrief interactive and scenario-based sessions in the context of Conflict Management training.

The course on the whole consists of home study as well as the practical environment and scenario-based training in order to make sure that the professionals attending these programs have understood the importance of how to implement these skills in a real situation. The training culminates with 40 questions and multiple choices tests that help check the quality and readiness of candidates.

More and more business establishments and licensed facilities now recognise the importance of proper conflict management skills that lead to developing creative and more appropriate solutions, preserving relationships, saving time and money, confidentiality, empowering people to resolve their own disputes and creating more durable outcomes.

Any conflicts occurring within business and entertainment facilities can lead to severe repercussions in terms of loss of business, lowering of confidence in the guests and visitors, damage to the brand name and image as well as chances of severe loss to property and goods. SIA recognises the same and has laid down rules and requirements for security operatives to receive proper conflict management and physical intervention training in order to further develop and improve their skills for effective security protection to be maintained.
