Alcohol Awareness Week: Why It’s Worth Drinking In

Often, witnessing a person highly inebriated can provide a light source of entertainment. We might snigger when we hear someone slur their words or raise an eyebrow when we see a person stagger into furniture. We’ll joke; ‘someone’s had one too many!’ But there is also an ugly side to drinking and it stems from habit.

Just how much are we drinking and how often? Many of us may enjoy a drink at the end of the day to take the edge off stress, but for some, such a habit can spiral out of control and grip us into addiction.

Thankfully, there’s a solution and it starts by simply talking about it. This week is Alcohol Awareness Week, an event that pledges to do exactly that, raise awareness. Held from November 19th to the 25th, the event aims to drive conversations about alcohol consumption, to identify those in need of support and aid them back to sobriety. The third and final objective is to call for change at every level, from afflicted individuals to policy-makers.

While those working in the security sector, particularly Door Supervisors, have a clear responsibility to control drunk and disorderly behaviour, they may find themselves encountering people with a potential drinking problem. Many individuals in this situation are in denial and may disguise their affliction as simply being ‘sociable’.

Alcohol Awareness week has one overriding theme this year and it centers around ‘change’.

Why is change necessary?

Drinking is strongly considered normal or socially acceptable. It is often seen as an expectation rather than a choice. Consequently, people across the UK are suffering as a result of excessive drinking or are harmfully exposed to other’s drinking habits.

Make change happen
