What is Asbestos Awareness Training?

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 (COSHH) regulations, employers have a legal duty to provide adequate control of employees’ exposure to harmful substances in the workplace.

Asbestos started being used in the 1870s; however, even by the early 1900s, the dangers started to become known. Despite the risks, asbestos was still used until it became banned in 1999 in the UK. The substance still exists in many buildings and structures, and this course informs attendees of the dangers of asbestos, as well as historical uses and where asbestos might be found.

It should be noted that this course does not teach people how to remove asbestos.

The course is of particular use to asbestos removal workers. It is also helpful for building managers and construction workers, especially those working in demolition and refurbishment.

How long is the course?

The course lasts for one day.

What will I learn?

The course will give course attendees an understanding of the risks concerning asbestos exposure and how to avoid work that may disturb asbestos and materials containing asbestos.

The effects of asbestos.
The types of asbestos and where it might be more likely to be found in buildings.
How to avoid the risk of asbestos exposure.
The procedures to follow regarding licensable and non-licensable work.
The guidelines to follow when discovering asbestos.
Emergency procedures for when asbestos is released in an uncontrolled way (such as an escape of asbestos dust).

Course Requirements

There are no formal requirements for this course, but you should be over 18 years of age and have a reasonable level of English.

Assessments and Certification

There is a practical or knowledge assessment at the end of the course. Candidates will receive results electronically within 5-7 days.

Retakes

If you fail to pass the first time, you can retake the exam on the day or within 90 days, free of charge.
