Aims and learning outcomes

Gain an understanding of how to apply the requirements of BS 7858:2019 for the screening of individuals working in a secure environment, including:

relevant legislation and regulatory requirements
the difference between personal opinion and fact
the implications of non-compliance

Who should participate?

The standard requires that you are trained in the requirements of screening and have awareness of the standard in your role as a screening administrator or controller. You yourself should be screened to this standard.

Where interviewing, screening and deciding on employment are conducted in separate departments, then coordination of activities should take place.

In this course we will go over the complete requirements of the BS7858 framework. BS7858:2019 came into effect 30 September 2019 and replaced the BS7858:2012 which was withdrawn on 31 March 2020.

Following an interview and before limited screening the following must be completed as a minimum:

Establish a screening file
Information provided e.g. application form
Confirmation of identity and address
SIA licence validation
Public information search (not a credit check)
Global watchlist checks

Copies of checks undertaken should be retained in a screening file.

British Standard requirements for individual services dictate the screening requirements:

BS 7499 for Security Guarding - requires 5 year screening
BS PD 6662 Alarm Installation - requires 5 year screening
BS 7872 Cash and Valuables in Transit - requires 10 year screening
BS 5979 Alarm Receiving Centre - requires 5 year screening
BS 7984 Keyholding and Response - requires 5 year screening
