What is Safety Health and Environmental Awareness (SHEA)?

The EUSR Safety Health and Environmental Awareness (SHEA) suite of passport schemes has been developed across the utility sector to provide an industry-standard concerning health, safety, and environmental awareness.

This Safety Health and Environmental Awareness (SHEA) Water course has been developed specifically by the water industry and is highly relatable to the day job, making it easy to follow. On completing the course, attendees will understand the importance of clean and safe drinking water and what to do in an emergency. On completion of the course, delegates will receive the SHEA Water registration.

Who is the course for?

The Safety, Health and Environmental Awareness (SHEA) Water course leads to being able to register with the scheme. It is suitable for all employees who work in the water industry and have access to operational sites.

How long is the course?

The course lasts for one day.

What will I learn?

Key UK companies have created the SHEA water course to give course attendees all the essential knowledge of water hygiene practices. There are eight modules in total, six core modules and two modules that are specific to the water industry:

• Module 1 - Understanding workplace responsibilities, including legal obligations for both employer and employee.
• Module 2 - Understanding the effects of our work on the environment, including their impact on employees.
• Module 3 - Identifying and controlling risks, including how to prevent them.
• Module 4 - Common hazards in the workplace, including how to identify and minimise them.
• Module 5 - Occupational health hazards, including how to identify and reduce them.
• Module 6 - Responding to emergencies, including inspecting, reporting, and responding to poor health and safety in the workplace.
• Module 7 - Sewerage network and process operations, including the hazards linked to this industry and environment.
• Module 8 - Highway working and excavations, including creating a safe working environment for workers and the public.

Course Requirements

There are no fundamental course requirements other than being over 18 years of age and having a competent level of English so that you can understand the course and safety signage.

Assessments and Certification

The course is delivered and assessed by Energy & Utility Skills approved trainers. At the end of the one-day course, you will be invited to share your experiences, and trainers will evaluate the skills and knowledge gained by attendees.

SHEA Card

Your EUSR registration for SHEA water will begin on the assessment date and is valid for three years. Successful candidates will be able to register online for a virtual SHEA card. If you wish, you can also purchase a physical SHEA Passport SmartCard with a chip.
