To renew a Site Supervisors' Safety Training Scheme Certificate, delegates must take a Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme Refresher training course.
Delegates wishing to attend the Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme Refresher Training Course will be required to provide proof that their current Site Supervisors' Safety Training Scheme Certificate is in date in order to attend the Refresher Training.

The Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme - Refresher (SSSTS-R) Course aims to provide health and safety knowledge while also offering a thorough overview of legislative changes and their impact on the workplace.

This course is intended for delegates who have previously passed the SSSTS course and have concrete proof of their successful attendance.
How long is the course?
The Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme Refresher is a one-day course lasting 7.5 hours.
What will I learn?
This course is designed to assist site supervisors to:
- Supervise health and safety on the job site by legal requirements and the context of their role.
- Understand their responsibility and accountability for on-site site health, safety, and worker welfare.
- Acknowledge that a safe site is efficient, cost-effective, productive, and environmentally friendly.
The learning outcomes of the course are divided into several modules, which are as follows:
Module 1:
- The goal of health and safety regulation and the various legal standards that must be adhered to guarantee this.
- How the CDM regulations support health and safety on site.
- Writing and using risk assessment methods to maintain a safe working environment.
- How to complete inspections and checks for a construction site.
- Reporting accidents, injuries, and ill health that may occur in the construction industry.
- How proper leadership and worker engagement can aid in protecting the workforce.
Module 2:
- Protecting the health and welfare of the construction industry workforce.
- How to manage first aid and emergency protocol for a site.
- Identifying and handling hazardous substances associated with working at a construction site.
- Health risks posed by asbestos and how to manage those risks.
- How to control exposure to respiratory hazards on a construction site.
- How to prevent exposure to noise and vibration for construction workers.
- Properly undertaking manual handling activities when lifting loads.
Module 3:
- Factors to be considered when putting up a construction site.
- Main fire hazards and basic requirements for fire safety on site.
- Electricity-related risks and safe work procedures when using or working close to live electrical circuits and equipment.
- Importance of on-site plant, transportation, and work equipment management.
- Standard requirements for safe lifting operations, equipment, and accessories.
Module 4:
- Critical principles for working safely at heights.
- Hazards and control considerations for excavation.
- Identifying, locating, and planning work near underground or overhead services.
- Dangers and precautions to take when working in confined spaces.
- Primary duties of temporary work supervisors.
Module 5:
- Understand one’s role in environmental awareness on site.
- State one's position in pollution prevention.
- How improper waste management can harm the environment.
- Explaining one's role in noise, nuisance, dust, and light reduction.
Course Requirements
To attend this course, you must be a candidate who has previously passed the SSSTS course and can provide full evidence of successful attendance. If an individual cannot give a copy of their certificate or locate it on the SSSTS system, they must retake the entire course. Delegates must also be fluent in English at the site supervisor level.
Assessments and Certification
To be certified for this course, a delegate must pass the SSSTS-R examination. This exam, which consists of 25 questions, covers all aspects of the course and has an 80% pass rate (24 out of 30). There are 22 multiple-choice questions and three short-written questions in total. There are typically four safety critical questions, and the candidate must correctly answer them to pass.
The exam lasts 30 minutes, and candidates may use the publication Construction site supervision (GE706) for the final ten minutes. After completion, the exam papers are sent to the CITB for marking. Exam results will be available to delegates as soon as the examination board releases them to Training4Employment, usually within 5 to 7 working days.
Successful candidates will receive a CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme certificate valid for five years upon completion. Although there is no physical SMSTS card, you may include your SMSTS certificate when applying for a CSCS card.
All delegates will be given their copy of the mandatory publications: Construction site supervision (GE706) and Toolbox talks (GT700), at the start of the course, which they will keep after completing the course.
Retakes
If a delegate scores between 70%-77% in the exam or an 80% pass rate but fails the safety critical questions, they may re-sit the exam. They can do this on the same day or the final day of another course within 90 days. Should the delegate fail to re-sit, they will be offered to retake the SSSTS-R course. When a delegate scores less than 67% in the final exam, they must attend the entire SSSTS-R course again before being allowed to re-sit the exam.
