What is the Certificate in Knowledge of Policing?

The Certificate in Knowledge of Policing (CKP) is a national level 3 qualification introduced by the College of Policing as a pre-join requirement for police forces.

The certificate in knowledge of policing training course covers the legislation, policy and processes required to be a Police Constable in the UK.

NOTE – Having a certificate in knowledge of policing prepares delegates for recruitment to the police services as a police constable in England and Wales. Successful achievement of the qualification does not guarantee recruitment as a trainee police constable. However, it does show a dedication to joining the police, and is relevant to other roles in the criminal justice sector.

What does the course include?

The Certificate in Knowledge of Policing qualification gives you an understanding of policing and police law, and enables delegates to demonstrate some of the critical decision-making skills required for the job as a Police Constable.

How will the qualification be assessed?

The assessment requirement will consist of open questions around different policing scenarios, and also multi-choice questions, which must be successfully completed to be awarded the qualification.

Delegates will complete some assessments online throughout the course, and a final assessment to conclude the course. Delegates will receive detailed feedback on each stage of the written assessments so that they can review progress and focus on learning towards the certificate in knowledge of policing qualification.

How long is the Certificate in Knowledge of Policing (CKP) qualification valid for?

The CKP qualification lasts indefinitely.

However, the College of Policing have introduced a ‘valid’ period during which the CKP qualification is recognised by police forces. This is important, as legislation changes over time and it is essential that police applicants retain current knowledge to enable them to become constables.

If you are working in a policing environment, such as a PCSO or police staff, the CKP qualification is valid for 4 years. For those who do not work in a policing environment the CKP qualification is valid for 3 years from the date of completion.

NOTE – Delegates retain access to the College of Policing learning platform, such as the student notes and e-learning, for 3 years so that they may refresh knowledge and keep up-to-date.
