A close protection officer is typically known as a bodyguard, and it can be a well-paid and exciting role with lots of perks.
Close protection officers or bodyguards have exciting and lucrative careers. This Close Protection Top-Up course is for those already working in the field who need to renew their licence.
Who is the course for?
If your three-year licence is coming up for renewal and you still want to work as a close protection officer, you must update your licence. As of October 1st, 2022, there are new elements to the qualification. This is due to the government recognising security professionals' vital role in protecting the public. You'll also renew and refresh previous elements to the qualification.
How long is the course?
The SIA Close Protection course runs over five days.

Previous content has been refreshed and updated, and in addition, the course has four new units which cover:
What are the applicant requirements for the course?
Since this is a top-up refresher course, those taking this course should have previously taken the full close protection course. Applicants will be over 18 and must have at least a reasonable fitness level due to the physical requirements of the role.
First aid is now a required skill for security professionals. You also need to have taken at least the Emergency at First Aid (EFAW) course, which is a one-day course. If you still need this qualification, you can book the EFAW course as a package along with the close protection top-up course.
Certification
After successfully completing the top-up course, you will be awarded your renewed level 3 close protection officer for working in the private security industry. The certificate will be sent to you electronically, with results from the course available five days after completion.

The SIA Top-Up Training Course can take between three-five days depending on the length of training chosen. Your training instructor assesses your skills with a mix of multiple choice exams and practical exercises.

Those travelling by car from the north or south can use the M1 exiting at junction 57. From there, take the A66(M) towards Darlington and take the A67 Yarm Road for the final part of the journey. Those travelling from the east from either Middlesbrough or Stockton on Tees can take the A66 to Long Newton, exiting along Mill Lane for the last two miles of the journey.
Getting to the venue by train
There are several trains stations close to the destination:
Dinsdale train station
Middleton St George, Darlington, DL2 1DX.
The destination is just less than two miles from your destination. You could walk this, which will take around forty minutes or jump in a taxi which will take about five minutes.
Allens West train station.
Stockton-on-Tees, TS16 0FA.
This station is just over four miles, and you can travel in a taxi, which will take around eight minutes.
Eaglescliffe train station
Station Rd, Eaglescliffe, Stockton-on-Tees TS16 0BT.
This station is also just under six miles from the venue and will take eleven minutes in a cab.
Yarm train station
Green Ln, Yarm TS15 9EH.
This station is also just six miles from the venue and will take thirteen minutes in a cab.
Parking
If you are driving to the location, there is parking available at the venue free of charge.
Walkability score
The address has a walk score of 11, meaning running errands generally require a car; however, there are some local cafes in walking distance to grab lunch.
Food and hotels near the venue
If you want to grab a bite to eat during lunchtime, the closest cafe is the Goosepool cafe, which is less than half a mile away. The cafe has a great view of the local airfield to watch light planes take off and land while you tuck into a salad, panini or a local favourite, corned beef pie.
Around 2 miles away, you'll find the Cafe Italissimo. As you'd expect from an Italian eaterie, there are delicious coffees to try and a great value lunchtime special of focaccia sandwich of the day with crisps and a coffee for just £4.95.
MJ's cake cafe is also around two miles from the venue. This is a must for those with a sweet tooth and all foodies. Try their posh fish finger sandwich with salad and mushy peas or hot roast beef ciabatta with roasties. There are also excellent value breakfast sandwiches and delicious American pancakes with various indulgent toppings.
If you are travelling for the course and need a hotel, our best budget option would be the Locomotion Hotel, a 2-star hotel just over 5 miles from the venue or a 10-minute drive. The hotel has a public house, so while no breakfast is offered, evening meals are available, and you can chill out and smoke in the pub or the beer garden. There are also bar snacks available when the restaurant isn't serving, and you'll find wifi and complimentary tea and coffee in the modernly furnished rooms.
The Travelodge Darlington is also just under 4 miles away on the A67. This basic hotel doesn't have onsite catering or a bar, but you can expect super comfy beds and bedding as per the Travelodge brand.
