What does the course include?
The SSSTS course is an ideal foundation for attaining a basic understanding of health & safety duties and responsibilities for junior management in construction work.
Content included in the course over a 2-day period include:
- An introduction into health and safety on site, as well as welfare and environmental issues that those in a supervisory role must be aware of.
- Legal responsibilities that are relevant to supervisors whilst safely managing a construction site
- What is expected of site supervisors, including occupational health issues that arise within the construction sector
- An understanding of how health and safety law is structured, and how the role of a supervisor links in with the role of a site manager when controlling site safety
- Risk assessments – how to carry these out and why method statements are a legal requirement
- Fire prevention and control, control of hazardous substances, CDM (Construction Design Management) Regulations, Working at Height, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), manual handling, accidents and first aid
- How to carry out site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefings
- Understanding the need for proactive and reactive monitoring
Course Overview
The Site Supervision Training System (SSSTS) summarises all applicable legislation and other factors affecting safe working conditions in the building, construction, and civil engineering industries. It is endorsed by Build UK and exceeds CITB standards to emphasise the importance of risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.

How long is the course?
This is a two-day, 15-hour course.
What will I learn?
The SSSTS course's primary goals are to enable supervisors to:
- Oversee health and safety on the job site per current legal requirements and within the scope of their responsibilities.
- Gain an understanding of responsibility and accountability for on-site worker health, safety, and welfare.
- Recognise that a secure site is more efficient, cost-effective, productive, and environmentally friendly.
- To ensure that the worker's health and safety responsibilities are understood.
Delegates should be able to complete all of the following learning outcomes by the end of the SSSTS course:
Module 1:
- The purpose of health and safety legislation and the various legislative requirements must be met.
- How the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations promote workplace health and safety.
- How to design, implement, and maintain a health and safety management system.
- Writing and implementing risk assessments and techniques to guarantee a safe working environment.
- How to carry out statutory construction site inspections and checks.
- How to report accidents, injuries, and illnesses in the construction industry
- How good leadership and employee involvement support worker safety.
Module 2:
- How to safeguard the well-being and health of the construction industry's personnel.
- Managing emergency protocols and first aid at a building site.
- Handling potentially harmful substances whilst working on a construction site.
- Asbestos's health risks and how to manage them.
- Controlling dust and fume exposure for construction workers.
- Controlling construction workers' exposure to noise and vibration.
- How to perform manual handling activities correctly when lifting loads.
Module 3:
- Factors to be taken into account when setting up a construction site.
- Main fire hazards and basic fire safety requirements.
- Dangers of electricity and good working practices for handling electric tools and equipment.
- Importance of control and management of plant, transport, and work equipment on site.
- Basic lifting requirements, equipment and accessories, and safety precautions.
Module 4:
- Critical principles for working safely at height.
- The primary risks and control considerations for excavation work.
- Locating, identifying, and planning for work close to underground and overhead services.
- Hazards and safety considerations for working in a confined space.
- Main duties of temporary works supervisors.
Module 5:
- Understand one’s role in environmental awareness on site.
- State your role in the prevention of pollution.
- Explain how environmental damage can occur from poor management of waste.
- Explain one’s role in reducing noise, dust, and light.
Course Requirements
Delegates undertaking this course should hold or be about to have the supervisor role and be competent in English at the site supervisor level.
Assessments and Certification
At the end of the SSSTS course, there’s an exam that delegates must pass to obtain certification. This exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions and three short written questions, with a pass mark of 24 out of 30 (80%). Each exam paper typically contains four safety critical questions, and the candidate must correctly answer them to pass the exam. Exam papers are returned to the CITB for marking once completed. As soon as the examination board releases the results to Training4Employment, the delegates receive them within 5 to 7 working days.
Delegates who pass the exam will receive a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate valid for five years. Although there is no physical SSSTS Card, your site certificate qualification can be listed when applying for additional qualifications.
Training providers are required to give each participant a copy of the two required publications (Toolbox lectures and Construction site supervision) at the beginning of each session. The participant will keep the publications when the course is over.
Retakes
If a delegate passed the trainer review but received a 70% to 77% on the exam, or if they received an 80% pass rate but failed the safety critical questions, they may retake the exam. They may do so within ninety days, either on the same day or the last day of another course. If a delegate fails to resit, they will be allowed to retake the SSSTS course with one free resit.
However, if a delegate receives less than 67% on the final exam, they must retake the entire SSSTS course before being allowed to resit the exam.
